Project
description

Enguri Dam is much more than just a technical structure; it is a true evidence of engineering achievement. Its size and power are impressive to anyone to witness the sight. The 272 metres in heights and 728 metres in length arch-shaped dam surrounded by the Caucasus Mountains is one of the world’s largest concrete arch dams and most ambitious pieces of structural engineering. The construction of largest-ever industrial project in Georgia commenced in 1961 under Soviet Union and attracted professional international attention over many decades. Today, the plant fulfils nearly half of Geogia’s energy requirements, providing a reliable source of clean energy for Georgia and beyond.

Project Description

The 272 metres in heights and 728 metres in length arch-shaped dam surrounded by the Caucasus Mountains is one of the world’s largest concrete arch dams and most ambitious pieces of structural engineering. The construction of largest-ever industrial project in Georgia commenced in 1961 under Soviet Union and attracted professional international attention over many decades. Today, the plant fulfils nearly half of Geogia’s energy requirements, providing a reliable source of clean energy for Georgia and beyond.

In 2015 the dam was added to the list of the country’s most distinguished cultural heritage sites, which was followed by an ambitious plan by the Georgian government to turn the site into the most important tourist attraction in Georgia. The aim of the new tourist infrastructure is to transform the site into a high-class world level attraction that would invite visitors from both Georgia and abroad. In the longer run, the visitor centre would become the first industrial monument in Georgia to combine a museum and a science centre.

In joint with KOKO Architects, Motor planned the Discovery and Visitor Centre that extends around the 157 ha surrounding the dam. The Centre is divided between four main topics: Renewable Energy, Powerful Water, Enguri Dam and Civil Engineering. Additionally, kids’ area is planned as well as outdoor play and temporary exhibitions areas.

Engury Discovery and Visitor Centre includes exhibits that give an understanding of basic scientific phenomena that focus on hands-on and interactivity to encourage kids to explore and learn through experimentation. The exhibition focuses on Dam-related scientific solutions as well to outline the technological and engineering mastery of Enguri Dam.
