In joint with KOKO Architects, we planned and produced the award-winning Estonian Pavilion for EXPO 2015 Milano. The topic for the EXPO was “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. Estonian pavilion was named “Gallery of Estonia”, conceptually derived from the idea of Estonia as a dynamic and smart small country where each clever initiative is recognized and can have an impact. A gallery of 25 different exhibition boxes showcased various topics of Estonia, arranged as a three-storey nest-like wooden building.
The aim of the pavilion design was to create a welcoming and warm atmosphere that is dynamically filled with curious facts, captivating stories, exceptional nature sounds, music, and elegantly simple technological solutions. The essence of the pavilion was the idea of a gallery of nature and creativity, which comes to life once people are attending. The pavilion had no set visitor path and featured swings for the visitors to use. The pavilion was built of sustainable materials with the aim of reusing after the EXPO finished.
Each exhibition box, known as nest box, featured its own sub-theme or topic. Many interactive solutions were used, such as a quern-stone simulator and an Estonian-designed bicycle Viks simulator which the visitors could use to ride virtually through Tallinn. The outdoor exhibition featured swings for all visitors to enjoy, and a stage area for concerts and special events.
