description
The Tallinn TV Tower was originally built to provide better telecommunication services for the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics regatta. A few years later, the TV Tower, located in the pine forests of Pirita, became a symbol of Estonia’s regained independence when local activists held it against Soviet soldiers. With its 313 m, TV Tower is the tallest building in Tallinn.
The tower boasts the most spectacular viewing platform in the city from which even the coast of Finland is visible in clear weather. The platform, standing at 170 m was closed to the public in 2007 as it no longer complied with the fire safety regulations. The building underwent renovation works between 2009 and 2012 and was opened once again as a visitor centre. The permanent exhibition situated on three levels focuses on telecommunication, innovation, and the history of Tallinn TV Tower.

The process of developing a visitor centre in TV Tower started with pinning down the circle of topics that would become the basis of the exhibition. TV Tower as a symbol of regaining Estonian independence fit well with other big achievements that Estonia and its people have been able to obtain and are regarded for in the world. Estonians are first and foremost known for being innovative. We gave that thought a physical form through creating giant moving robotic mushrooms that move around slowly and display content. We worked on designing and creating the automation of the mushrooms.
The exhibition in TV Tower is split into three parts: traditional exhibition with added multimedia, a TV studio to outline the functions of Tallinn TV Tower through time, and a short 3D film of TV Tower, directed by the Oscar nominated director Tanel Toom. We created the TV studio located on the 1st floor, where visitors can try out being a news anchor. The mock-TV studio looks close to a real studio, and the visitor can record a clip of themselves reading out a piece of news. The clip is then combined with reports from the scene to make it appear as a real piece of TV news.

On the upper floor of the exhibition, visitors can individually interact with the large mushroom-robots that function as touch screen displays and move slowly with motion sensors. The floor itself has cut-out windows onto which the braver can step. The spectacular view from TV Tower is complemented by a program produced by us. It consists of a timeline animation of how the view developed over the centuries and what the surroundings look like in all four seasons. With an overlay of the view, objects and their information are displayed. TV Tower is a great place to spend time with family and friends, whether at the exhibition, enjoying the view or dining at the sky-level restaurant.
